YMCA celebrates National Senior Health and Fitness Day – Story

JOPLIN, Mo. – “It’s easy to learn, it’s fun to play,” explained pickleball player Cathy Wendt.

“I’m really surprised at what an active game it is and how sought-after it is,” added Lori Jones with the Y.

The Joplin Family Y celebrates National Senior Health and Fitness Day by getting people active and socializing, which includes an up-and-coming game called pickleball.

“It’s one of the great aerobic sports that a lot of people don’t know about in this area,” said Wendt.

“This event is so perfect for the Y,” Jones continued. “The theme this year of National Senior Health and Fitness Day is ‘With Movement, There’s Improvement’ and so we just want to get them an opportunity to get moving.”

“It’s all about seniors being fit and healthy and active,” explained Senior Volunteer Services Coordinator Jamie Gillmore.

Not only does the last Wednesday of May recognize active lifestyles for seniors, but it also highlights that a healthy life should also include social, positive relationships.

“That’s just one more piece of staying young–you want to be out and about,” said Gillmore.

“They just want to talk, they just want to be together and socialize,” said Jones.

So whether you’re playing pickleball or playing bingo, get up and get moving.

“It’s just a great time, come join!” Wendt added.
