Yellowjackets host Senior and Parent Night against DL

“It’s really great to be in this pool because we know this pool so well,” senior swimmer Megan Tellinghuisen said. “The girls are comfortable with it since we have been here so long. It’s really nice to see them in their own element, per se, even though we are not in Perham.”

While the Yellowjackets ended up on the short end on the score, 128-58, it was a surreal night for Emily Martinson, Anna Carlson and Tellinghuisen, the three seniors, according to Tellinghuisen.

“This is my last season with these girls. Like we said in our huddle before the meet started, ‘this is all we have so we have to give it now,’ ” Tellinghuisen said. “The other seniors feel the same way. We are just really going after it and getting everything done that we can this season since it’s our last one.”

Tellinghuisen said the three can relate to each other due to their longevity on the team. Tellinghuisen has been a veteran member and one of the key swimmers on the Yellowjacket team.

“I’m really glad I’m sharing it with them. They know exactly what I’m going through because they have gone through the same thing,” Tellinghuisen said. “Two of us have been on the team for six years and the other for three years. We really know how to get each other going and to get each other pumped up for our races.”

Tellinghuisen finished first in the 100 freestyle event. She won a close race, edging out Detroit Lakes’ Chelsy Johnson at the line. Tellinghuisen finished with a time of one minute and .41 seconds.

Tellinghuisen was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team as well. She swam the anchor leg, helping them out touch the Lakers team at the wall. Anna Carlson swam the first leg, followed by Irene Mursu and Emily Martinson. They finished with a time of 1:52.06, edging Detroit Lakes by .04.

Maiden said, overall, the team cut 65.42 seconds, while the Perham/NYM divers added 13.45 points. They added three more section qualifying times and had three swimmers compete the Iron Woman challenge in the form of Madi Ebeling, Shanetta Reitmeyer and Hannah Lung.

“We got a lot of personal records early in the season, which was really nice to see, and continuing on into tonight. I’m sure we will get more in the future and that’s really good to see,” Tellinghuisen said. “Our main focus is racing the time and not our competitors and making sure we set goals for ourselves and get those personal records, better ourselves instead of comparing to other people, because that can be a bit of a letdown.”

The Yellowjackets continue their season with another extended road trip when they travel to the Fosston Invitational at noon on Saturday. The Yellowjackets won that meet a year ago.
