Wildcats foiled on senior night

The visiting North Duplin Lady Rebels spoiled Hobbton’s volleyball senior night Tuesday with a 3-1 win.

The first set was a hard fought back and forth battle with Hobbton coming from behind to trade leads and tie the game 3 times in the last eight points. The set was tied at 24 when the Lady Wildcats got a couple of points off serves to take the game 26-24.

However, things went downhill in the second set as the Wildcats lost 25-12. The intensity of the Wildcats lagged and North Duplin took advantage.

“The girls came out strong in the first set,” commented Hobbton coach Tori Reynolds. “In the second set, we slacked off a bit and quit moving and quit playing defense. In the third set we picked it up a bit with movement both on and off the ball. However, our net game wasn’t strong.”

“In the final set, we made a comeback getting the intensity back up. We worked both on and off the ball but we just couldn’t pull it out,” concluded Reynolds.

For the Wildcats, Sarah Daughtry and Arianna Corbett had four kills each and Laken Stewart had four aces.

The Wildcat JV lost is straight sets 20-25 in the first set and 16-26 in the second set. In the JV game, Katie Davis had two aces. Jada Parker had two aces and five kills.

“In the JV game, the girls came out strong, playing hard and battling back,” said Reynolds. “Our net game wasn’t as strong as it usually is. In the second set, our defense wasn’t able to keep the balls out of the turf as well as some of their kills. We weren’t talking and moving on and off the ball.”

“I’m really proud of the way my girls played tonight, especially the varsity girls on senior night,” Reynolds concluded. “Even though we lost, they came back and played Hobbton volleyball for their last home game.”

The Wildcats will be losing five seniors, including Daughtry, Cameron Hunter, Stewart, Delaney Thornton and Hollie Leftwich.

They will travel to Lakewood Thursday and will finish their regular season at Neuse Charter Oct. 12.
