Silver Linings: Senior Healthy Living Expo

What: A free event focused on aging

When: Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Manchester Community College, 1066 Front St., Manchester

New Hampshire has the second oldest population in the country and while we may not be getting any younger, we certainly are getting smarter about what it means to have an aging population.

The New Hampshire Union Leader will host its first “Silver Linings: Senior Healthy Living Expo” on Saturday, Sept. 30 — a free event focused on aging in New Hampshire. Numerous experts will lead discussions and answer your questions about health care and caregiving. There will be more than 40 booths offering information on resources and programs available across the state.

“It will give people a chance to discover what is new in aging in New Hampshire,” said Doug McNutt, associate state director for AARP NH. “I hope people will come and learn about new resources and programs that help people lead better lives as they age.”

The expo was borne out of the Union Leader’s ongoing series on aging called ‘Silver Linings.’ For the last year, reporter Gretchen Grosky has been examining the issues of New Hampshire’s aging population by highlighting solutions that have helped here in the Granite State and elsewhere in the country.

“The response to the Silver Linings columns demonstrated that there was an interest, community-wide, in exploring more of the services and resources available to aging adults and their caregivers and families,” said Shannon Sullivan, community relations manager for the Union Leader. “It is our hope that seniors and caregivers are able to see that many organizations and businesses exist and are here to work with them as they age or need to care for those who are growing older.”

The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Manchester Community College. Information booths will be located in the multipurpose room at the main entrance. They will provide information on everything from health care to real estate to home care and legal help.

Experts will be hosting discussions in nearby rooms. Some of the topics that will be addressed include fraud, how the body ages, ways to stay active and how to help caregivers.

The Silver Linings series is a partnership between the Union Leader and the New Hampshire Endowment for Health.

The expo is sponsored by AARP New Hampshire, Visiting Angels, Ascentria In-Home Care, Ambrogi Law Office PLLC, Home Instead Senior Care, Ledgewood Bay Assisted Living and New England Allergy, Asthma Immunology P.C.
