TRAVEL SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: Newtown Rock 18U Showcase completes successful summer

Newtown Rock 18U Showcase is true to its name, competing primarily in showcase softball tournaments with the goal of having its players seen by colleges. A trip to Nationals is not part of the equation.

Three of the team’s five seniors are committed to college, with the other two — including University of Mississippi-bound Sam Renson (New Hope-Solebury) — considering the possibility of walking on.

Johanna Batterton (Council Rock North) will play at Haverford College, Kelsie Whalen (Notre Dame) has committed to play at St. Joseph’s College (N.Y.), and Kelly Cyliax (Central Bucks West) will continue her career at the University of Mary Washington.

“It’s great to see our players have the opportunity to continue to play at the collegiate level,” coach Curt Cyliax said. “We focus on playing the right way, playing as a team and playing to win, not on showcasing the talents of just a few players.”

The team’s schedule included competing in ASA 18U Class A and Gold as well as PGF level tournaments. Key college showcases included the Pennsbury Invitational, New England’s Finest and Virginia Legends Summer Scorcher.

“We focus on tournaments in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, because that is where our players want to attend college,” coach Cyliax said.

According to Kelly Cyliax, a three-year veteran of the squad, playing for Rock helped prepared her to play at the next level level.

“Our coaches have always stressed the importance of teamwork and having a good attitude,” the recent West graduate said. “These are things college coaches are looking for when they watch us play.

“I think those expectations have not only helped us be successful and recruited, but also made it a lot of fun to play. The girls on the team are more than teammates, they are friends. We work hard but also have a lot of fun.”

Other locals on the roster include Asia Barnard (Neshaminy), Wiss Chiappetta (Pennridge), Alex Rishel (Pennsbury), Allison Rose (Pennsbury) and Alexa Zubler (Council Rock North).
