Some View Government as a Problem with Home Health Care

While it may appear as though the healthcare industry throughout the United States is in shambles, it remains the leader in the world. Even in countries where people tout the benefits of government support healthcare solutions, those with dire health issues or who need sensitive procedures often come to this country. The home care industry is sometimes also lumped into the same sad lens of perspective, and while there is a chorus of people who demand that the government step in and ‘rescue’ it, there are others who believe government is the problem.

Florida’s District 19 Rep Francis Rooney believes the government is taking an overly aggressive role in home health care, which is leading to greater challenges disabled adults and seniors need to contend with.

In the opinion editorial written by Rep. Francis Rooney, Florida’s 19th District, published by The Daily Caller, entitled, Keep the Government Out of Home Health Care, Mr. Rooney said:

“People should be in charge of their own health care decisions. If our seniors wish to receive care in the comfort of their own home instead of in an impersonal and unfamiliar setting, they should be able to do so without unnecessary penalties. It is not right to require individuals receiving home care to follow confusing federal record keeping rules. Further, the overtime provisions limit the number of hours nurses can work, which negatively affects their relationships with patients and the quality of services provided. This contradicts the purpose of home care, which is designed to make patients feel as comfortable as possible while receiving care.”

One of the arguments that Mr. Rooney makes is that the Obama Administration catered to union lobbyists in 2013 when the Department of Labor enacted new home care regulations, essentially providing the same minimum wage and overtime protections most other workers have enjoyed for decades. While those supporting this changed lauded the move, others worried about how this would affect access to care for those who were struggling financially.

The industry as a whole has responded, but there have been several cases across the country of clients having reduced access to care. Not everyone agrees that government has the answer to the challenges in health care and home care, and these individuals are calling on Labor Secretary Acosta to reverse course and allow seniors and disabled adults to once again take control of their care at home. It’s unclear whether there is any desire within the Trump Administration to make these types of changes.
