Haley Oliver of Louisville, Kentucky, recently was awarded a Study Abroad Grant worth $1,000 from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Oliver is one of 25 students nationwide to receive the award.

Currently a senior majoring in psychology at Georgetown College, Oliver will use the grant for her study abroad at the University of Oxford.

The selection process for a study abroad grant is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, the relation of travel to academic preparation and career goals, a personal statement, letters of recommendation, and acceptance into a study abroad program. Each recipient will receive $1,000 to be applied toward travel abroad.

Established in 2001, Phi Kappa Phi’s Study Abroad Grant Program has awarded more than $800,000 to undergraduate students. In addition to these grants, the Society awards $1.4 million each biennium to qualifying students and members through graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

About Phi Kappa Phi

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897. Georgetown College’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was installed in 2003. The Georgetown College chapter is one of nearly 300 chapters on select college and university campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Dr. Tracy Livingston, Associate Professor of Biology, is the current chapter president.

Annually, Phi Kappa Phi nationally inducts approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff, and alumni. PKP membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Students receive PKP medallions and certificates during the induction ceremony. Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.

The Society’s mission is “To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”
