Professional athlete taps into home care business

Former NBA player Mustafa Shakur is looking to score big in the home care industry.

Shakur, a native of Philadelphia, has opened the Pennsylvania’s first Executive Care franchise in Montgomery County. The business serves seniors, disabled and recovering individuals from Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.

Shakur researched different franchises and ultimately determined that Executive Care would meet his needs.

“I wanted to find something I thought fit with my own personal goals and something that involved helping people,” said Shakur, who currently plays with a professional German team.

Shakur partnered with family members to launch his venture. His wife, Joclyn; brother, Mujahid Shakur; amd sister-in-law, Angela Shakur, are also co-owners of the business.

Shakur says they were drawn to the home health care industry for various reasons.

“What we saw as a team was being able to help people and being able to provide high-quality [care] and to be able to have a strong business,” Shakur explained.

“What the numbers tell us is that there will be an increasing need for home health care as the baby boomer era continues to get older. So we thought that was a good place to be in.”

Shakur’s venture comes as the home health care sector is booming. The growth is being driven by various factors including a rising geriatric population and the need for affordable care delivery as health care costs continue to rise.

The global industry is estimated to reach revenues of $303 billion by 2020 according to a Transparency Market Research report.

When Shakur and his team first visited Executive Care headquarters in New Jersey, they were impressed with the management and what the company had to offer.

Founded in 2004, Executive Care focuses on providing quality care which enables their clients to stay in the comfort of their own homes. Services range from companionship and help with meal preparation and household chores to help with bathing, personal hygiene and personal care. Executive Care also serves individuals recovering from illness, injury or surgery.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with a full-service home care franchise with a proven business model and deep understanding of the critical role home care is playing in the lives of millions of Americans,” Shakur said.

“We firmly believe in Executive Care’s core values and found it to be the best home care franchise fit for us. Our business will bring an improved, coordinated level of care to the area so that local families can find the comfort they need for themselves and their loved ones.”

Shakur is already considering the possibility of expanding his footprint.

“We would love to expand,” he added. “That is part of our thought process — to continue to grow larger as a business in home care.”

Shakur played college basketball for the University of Arizona. He has played professionally in Europe, Lebanon, the NBA D-League and the NBA.
