Prep Roundup: Vanguard girls hoops takes big win on senior night

Seniors Beijing Ferguson and Tomiya Brown are the captains of the Vanguard girls basketball team and the glue that holds the team together.

Monday they played their final regular season home game for the Knights taking a 60-21 win over Belleview.

Ferguson had four points, five assists and four steals and Brown had two points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

“They (the seniors) are pretty much the glue that holds everyone together,” assistant coach Terrance Lewis said. “They don’t get a lot of the credit but they do a lot of the dirty work, or the blue collar work as I like to say.

“Beijing specifically, is usually matched up against our opponent’s best player and rarely leaves the court. They are both very coachable and that is invaluable; there definitely will be some big shoes to fill.”

Freshman point guard Nasia Powell led the way for Vanguard Monday with 37 points, four steals and four assists.

Junior guard Essence Bell tallied eight points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Vanguard (15-8) will travel to Lecanto Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for their final regular season game of the season.

 

West Port 49, Forest 33: At Forest, the Wolf Pack were led by Gabby Lora who had 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and nine assists to help lead West Port to a road victory Monday.

Jada Freeman had 13 points and six rebounds and Danesha Wilson had 13 points and added seven rebounds.

Forest was led by Deashia Brown who had nine points, eight rebounds and an assist and Kimmy Kohlmaier who whd six points, five rebounds and an assist. Tatiana Williams added six points for the Wildcats.

West Port (9-14) will host The Rock Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Forest (17-5) will host Citrus for senior night Wednesday at 6 p.m.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

 

Meadowbrook 65, Countryside 30: At Countryside, Zack Stewart set a Meadowbrook school record Monday scoring 45 points in the Mustangs’ victory.

The previous school record was 42 points in a game.

Isaiah Paige had seven points and seven assists and Charlie Albert had six points and five rebounds in the win.

Meadowbrook (13-3) will take on Cornerstone tonight at 6 p.m. for the FCAL Southern Championship at Countryside.

 

HEART Homeschool 53, Calvary Christian 44: At Ormond Beach, Jake Walker led the Falcons with 16 points, five rebounds and two assists in a road victory.

Lucas Wyland had 15 points, three assists and four steals and Cody Bagley had 13 points, three assists and nine blocks. Bagley went a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.

HEART (27-3) will host HOPE (Starke) tonight at 6:30 p.m.
