New senior-led Ballet Folklorico group ready for inaugural performance

Alice Aguilar is excited to introduce a new Ballet Folklorico in Redlands.

Six senior citizens who attend the Joslyn Senior Center hope to dance their way into your hearts at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29. This first performance is hosted by Linda Valley Senior Living and will take place at the Redlands-based center at 21 Grant St., according to a news release. The event is free.

The group meets at the center each Monday to rehearse.

“They take pride in trying to be authentic,” Aguilar of Redlands said Wednesday. “They also take pride in performing and bringing that culture to people who may not be able to travel to Mexico.”

By performing for audiences their own age, Aguilar hopes others are inspired to join or take part in social activities.

“Because we’re a small group, we can (travel) and because we are seniors we can go during the day,” Aguilar said. “I’m really impressed with these ladies. One of them, I don’t know how old she is, but I think she is in her 80s, does tap, hula, flamenco and this. This is their way of enjoying life.”
