Huron Girls’ Swim/Dive Third in Annual Pioneer Classic in East Grand Rapids

The 2017 River Rats continue to excel in the pool and on the board.  Yesterday they traveled to East Grand Rapids for the annual “Pioneer Classic,” featuring nine teams spanning Michigan, and giving an early taste of state championship competition.  Point totals were as follows:  East Grand Rapids (658), Farmington Hills Mercy (567), Ann Arbor Huron (258), Hudsonville (228), Grand Ledge (197), Livonia Stevenson (193), Ann Arbor Pioneer (109), Portage Northern (101), and Okemos (14).

The Rats had many top 16 finishers, including an unprecedented 5 in the Diving event.  Continuing her winning streak, freshman Annie Costello blew away the competition with her score of 440.00, nearly 100 points ahead of 2nd place Amelia Sheline (356.35), diving for EGR. , Also scoring for the Rats were junior Becca Darnell in 6th (332.30), captain/senior Morgen Heissenbuettel, 7th (331.20), sophomore Sami Ruud (282.30, 20th), and junior Brooke Brenner, in non-point-scoring 16th (255.10).  Also diving for Huron were sophomore Anna Boerst, 17th (225.70), freshman Samantha Vessels, (219.15), and freshman Nour Moussaed, 24th (196.35).

In swimming, freshman Annaliese Streeter had another great day.  She began by swimming breaststroke in the opening 200 Medley Relay, propelling Huron’s “A” (senior Jewel Huang, Streeter, freshman Abbey Ketslakh, and junior YuJin Hyun) to 4th (1:52.31).  Huron’s “B” (captain/seniors Elaina Baker Laura Deng, junior Olivia Figueroa and freshman Amelia Conatser) racked up some points with their 15th place finish (2:01:61) in the relay. Streeter also took 6th (2:16.61) in the super-fast 200 IM—Huang was 4th (2:12:87) and freshman Emily Tran, just out of scoring range in 17th (2:22.48)–and swimming in her signature event, the 100 Breast, where she finished 3rd with a D1 state cut time of 1:08.98.  L. Deng (1:15:14) was 13th in that event. Finally, Streeter swam a leg of the 6th place 200 Free Relay (Hyun, Streeter, L. Deng, and senior Hannah Parrish) that touched in 1:48.46.  Huron’s “B” squad (Tran, junior Elizabeth Conatser, sophomore Susan Dowling, and captain/senior Sophie Flott) was 15th (1:53.08).

The 200 Free had two Rat scorers, Flott, 10th (2:06.67), and Parrish, 12th (2:07.48), with Dowling, just out of range, 18th (2:12.01).  Speedster freshman Abbey Ketslakh swam for 9th (25.62) in the 50 free, with Hyun coming in 12th (26.40), and Tran hauled in 15th place points in the 100 Fly (1:06.21), a race in which sophomore Anna Leone (1:06:53) clocked in 18thHyun, always a steady performer, was Huron’s lone scorer in the 100 Free–she was 13th (59.11)–but in the distance 500, Huron recorded three in the top 16:  Huang, 7th (5:24.03); Parrish, 12th (5:36.40), and Flott, 14th (5:39.42). E. Baker finished 14th (1:03.15) in the 100 Back, with Ketslakh just out of points range in 17th (1:05.07), and Huron’s “A” ended their day with a 5th place finish in the 400 Free Relay (Huang, Ketslakh, E. Baker, and Parrish), touching in 3:52.37.

Also competing for the Rats yesterday were freshmen Amaris Beal Pooja Yalavarthi, sophomores Faith Baker Kristina Holcombe, junior Jazmyn Whiren, and senior Claire Deng.  The Rats travel to Bedford Tues. Sept. 26th to face the Kicking Mules.
