Here’s who can ride Sacramento light rail for free this month

Students can ride light rail to school for free on the first day of school this month, Sacramento Regional Transit officials say.

The agency also will allow anyone 62 and older or anyone who is disabled to ride for free Aug. 21, which is National Senior Citizens Day.

“We want to encourage our students to take public transportation to school whenever possible,” said Henry Li, SacRT general manager. “We hope the free ride days will motivate students to try transit and become new riders.”

“Mobility is important for everyone in our community, especially seniors and persons with disabilities who may have limited transportation options,” said Andy Morin, SacRT board chairman and Folsom mayor. “Free ride days provide a great opportunity to show new riders that SacRT buses and light rail trains are a safe, clean and convenient way to travel.”

The agency’s typical fare for students and seniors is $1.35 per ride, or $3.50 for an all-day pass.
