Health officials educate about flu amid deadly season

Amid a flu season that’s left two Oregon children dead, health officials held a news conference Friday to educate the public about the illness and help people stay out of the sick bed.

Among the advice: Get vaccinated, stay home if you’re sick and wash your hands.

The deaths of the children — who were younger than 5 and 10 — come during a severe flu season nationwide, with 14 pediatric deaths as of the last week of December, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Oregon usually has one or no pediatric flu deaths a season, Dr. Ann Thomas, a state public health physician, previously said. Last season there were none.

With several months to go before the season ends, here are several things you should know about the flu.
