Health care with a senior focused

By catering to the 65 and older population, a new Gastonia medical facility hopes to improve the quality of life for those in that age group.

“We don’t think of being over 65 as reaching the end of the lifespan,” said Dr. Erica Savage-Jeter. “We think of it as beginning a new age and living the rest of your life in the best health possible.”

Partners in Primary Care, a facility that focuses on senior health care, is having a grand opening in Gastonia Tuesday, Oct. 10 at their office at 2910 E. Franklin Blvd., Suite 1. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Regular operating hours are Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The practice began seeing patients last month.

“We decided to open a new location in Gastonia because of the need for something like this in the area,” said Savage-Jeter, who works out of the office in Greenville, South Carolina. “We tend to open all of our locations in communities with a high senior citizen population.”

The Gastonia location is apart of a larger network of senior focused facilities located in 60 different cities around the United States. This location currently has 10 employees.

Savage-Jeter said one of the benefits of having a medical center that focuses primary on seniors is being able to spot in advance some of the health problems commonly found in people of that age group.

“I’m not suggesting that a normal physician can’t spot those things as well but since we are focused on senior care we make sure to scan for those chronic conditions often,” she said.

One of the common health problems in senior citizens in this region is diabetes. Savage-Jeter said that Partners uses screenings to stay on top of some of the complications associated with that chronic illness.

The facility design also caters to the senior population. It features larger than usual hallways, which gives more accessibility for people traveling with a wheelchair or walker. Each patient room also has additional chairs for patients visiting with their spouses or relative who might come along to the appointment.

“People in this age have a lot of living to still do and we want to help them do that,” said  Savage-Jeter.
