FAIRFIELD — With years in the marketing industry and a passion for healthcare, Neil Anand decided to set out and do his own thing by opening ComForCare home care in his hometown.

The Fairfield native launched the franchise on Dec. 7 in the Heritage Plaza at 1700 Post Road intent on providing non-medical, in-home care to seniors.

The franchise is one of hundreds located nationwide, with three other Connecticut-based ComForCare locations in Danbury, Stamford, and Avon.

“The point is preserving and enhancing the quality of life so that seniors can continue living at home,” Anand said. “We are here to really do the best we can so they can continue to live at home. People would like to stay at home as long as they can.”

The location offers personalized care plans for seniors depending on their individual needs.

Services include grooming care and general hygiene, transportation for errands, companionship, cooking, respite care, and more.

ComForCare also offers a range of hourly, overnight, and live-in caretaker options.

Anand said he takes a hands-on approach in developing a client’s care plan by going to the home with a registered nurse to meet with the seniors and their families in person.

“It’s very personal, and it’s an ongoing process,” he said. “As the owner, I am personally involved in every case not just at the beginning, but ongoing and following up.”

While the Fairfield-based location has just opened, Anand said he hopes to hire and train around 30 caregivers within his first few months.

Along with an orientation and training process, prospective employees must go through a specialized training program centered around Alzheimer’s and dementia care.

The program, which is also offered to family members, is tailored to build a better understanding of both conditions and how to work with clients who are diagnosed.

“We make sure the family members or anyone else who provides care beyond the caregiver also understands what’s going on, and it really puts them at ease as well,” Anand said.

While most of Anand’s career prior to opening the Fairfield business, was in marketing and market research, he said he has always had a passion for the healthcare industry stemming back to his childhood.

The Fairfield resident’s parents are practicing physicians at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport.

According to Anand, one of his longstanding memories was of his father taking him to the hospital when he made his rounds to visit the patients.

“The patients would love it because a little kid was there, but it was for him to show me, as I realized after the fact, that you’re very lucky,” he said. “There are some people who are sick and who are not doing well. They need help, and it’s always important to remember that.”

While he had no interest in following in his parent’s footsteps of becoming a doctor, Anand said he knew he wanted find a way to get involved in healthcare.

Almost two weeks into to owning the business, the Fairfield resident said his focus is “building a pool of quality and talented caregivers” who can service the community he cares about so much.
