Comfort Keepers Home Care President Myles McNamara is talking about what he believes is the perfect holiday gift idea for seniors: an innovative, easy-to-use tablet called the GrandPad.

While it looks like an iPad mini, McNamara noted it was designed specifically for seniors with the help of a 104-year-old woman in an effort to prevent isolation and depression.

“(It’s) a connection tool where we can video chat with our loved ones, we can have voice email back and forth, it’s got a music library, it’s got games like solitaire and roulette and things like that, it’s able to have pictures downloaded,” McNamara explained. “So what this really does is, (it) allows our seniors to be connected with their family and friends.”

The GrandPad operates on a closed network with a senior’s loved ones and is orchestrated by a family administrator from their smart phone.

Everything is controlled with one touch, and there isn’t even a power button to turn it on and off — it simply comes on when the cover is opened.

McNamara noted he is constantly asked for gift ideas for seniors by their family members, and said time and companionship is his go-to response, which the GrandPad can help facilitate.

“They don’t need another tchotchke,” he said. “What our seniors need is companionship and time — they want to see their kids, they want to see their grandkids.”

By purchasing a GrandPad through Comfort Keepers Home Care, a 27 percent discount is given as opposed to ordering it directly through the manufacturer, bringing the cost to $55 a month for unlimited data that doesn’t even require WiFi.

“$55 a month is less than you would pay for a cell phone package,” McNamara said. “Comfort Keepers is no part of that (revenue) — this is something I’m promoting on their behalf because I think it’s an amazing tool for our seniors… The goal here is to minimize, if not completely destroy, depression and isolation with our seniors.”
