The president of Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita is offering adult children advice on how to have what he calls “the talk” with their senior parents about home care.

Myles McNamara first recommends having the conversation before home care is even needed, and to take a respectful approach.

“Imagine someone walking up to you and saying, ‘You know what, we don’t think you can drive anymore — give me your car keys,’” McNamara said. “There’s probably a better approach than that… Don’t be a bull in a china shop.”

One point to bring up during the talk is that aging is inevitable for everyone, not just them.

“There’s one thing that we can all guarantee 100 percent in life — we’re all going to age,” McNamara said. “We are all going to need caregivers in our life.”

Another important point to stress is that in a way, home care allows seniors to be more independent, compared to being forced to move into assisted living.

“Say … ‘You’re the boss. It’s to maintain your independence, it’s to maintain your ability to stay in your home. Let’s have someone in and give you a helping hand,’” McNamara said.

By presenting home care as a type of concierge service, it can help seniors maintain their sense of dignity and even feel like they’re being pampered.

“Parents are proud,” McNamara said. “That’s why as a non-medical caregiving company, we always tell our clients we’re more like a concierge service. You’ve worked all your life, you deserve it — and so we can come in and keep the house straightened up and we can make the meals.”

Resources available on the Comfort Keepers Home Care website include a questionnaire on whether or not a senior is ready for home care, how to have “the talk,” when to take the car keys and more.

“More often than not,” McNamara said, “our seniors need just a helping hand in the home.”
