Myles McNamara, president of Comfort Keepers Home Care, regularly hears from adult children who know their parent is cognitively or physically declining, but refuses to accept the services of a professional caregiver.

“The toughest thing that our adult children are facing is when you have to make the paradigm shift or that transition of parenting your parents,” McNamara said. “At some point, we as a family caregiver and an adult child have to say, ‘Well, this is for your best interest.’”

Though parents may have been professors or even rocket scientists at some point, it’s important for adult children to recognize that they may no longer be making the best decisions for themselves.

“At some point there has to be the revelation that you need help,” McNamara said. “I tell my adult children a lot, ‘I know that’s what Mom wants, but we’ve got to overrule her,’ — and … I say this lovingly.”

Rather than be a “bull in a china shop,” McNamara recommends taking the necessary actions with dignity and respect for their senior parent or loved one.

“There’s a right way and a wrong way to do it, but the end results has to be the same — the decision that is in the best interest of our senior has to be obtained,” he said.

Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita strives to present themselves as a concierge service that can help with non-medical needs in an effort to maintain a seniors’ dignity and feeling of independence.

“I see it as more of like having a personal valet,” McNamara said. “You’ve worked hard all your life, and now let’s have yourself a butler come in and help with some of the things that you can’t do as efficiently as you used to.”

He continued, “We’re not nurses, we’re not here to take over your life — we’re here to enhance your life. You’re still the boss, but let’s make sure that you don’t break that hip.”
