Comfort Keepers Home Care: Home Health Versus Home Care

Many seniors and adult children don’t know the difference between home health and home care, so Comfort Keepers Home Care President Myles McNamara is offering clarification for Santa Clarita residents.

“It’s interesting because a lot of physicians can’t tell you the difference between home care and home health,” McNamara said. “So it’s kind of a blurred line sometimes.”

While home care is private pay, and therefore 100 percent patient/client-directed, home health is an actual nurse’s visit prescribed by a doctor.

“A lot of times people don’t understand that,” McNamara said, noting that as seniors age in place their mobility can be inhibited, making it difficult to get out to a doctor.

“You can actually call your physician and say, ‘Can you prescribe just a well check through a home health company?’” McNamara continued. “That will (usually) be picked up by Medicare, so you don’t have to get out and about if it’s hard to ambulate or what have you.”

In contrast, home care refers to the services of a professional caregiver from a company like Comfort Keepers Santa Clarita.

“Anything that doesn’t take a medical license to do — hands-on, personal care, ambulation assistance — whatever is needed in that home to allow the senior to age in place in their own home is what we do,” McNamara said.

McNamara reminded seniors that regardless of their situation, they shouldn’t let someone tell them they “have to do” something like move into a skilled nursing home when options like home health and home care are available.

“We can make our own medical decisions,” he said. “You have all these resources available to you where you can age in place at the location of your choosing. It could be a skilled nursing, it could be an assisted living, it could be a board and care, or it could be right there in your home where you bring someone like Comfort Keepers in as home care.”
